Last weekend we finally checked off the Madison County Nature Trail on Green Mountain, and it was the perfect easy escape. Just a mile and a half of well-marked, gentle trail that anyone can enjoy. Right at the trailhead you’ll find clean bathrooms — a small but welcome detail before you start.

The highlight for us was the covered bridge. Standing there, we watched geese glide across the water while turtles lounged on logs below. As we continued, the trail surprised us with dozens of tiny toads hopping across the path, turning an ordinary hike into something magical.

The trail winds gently around a peaceful pond, where the morning sunlight danced across the water and lit up the trees surrounding it in a warm, golden glow. A little further along, you’ll come across an old log cabin dating back to the 1800s — a quiet reminder of the mountain’s history. Nearby stands a charming little chapel, both adding a sense of timeless peace to the walk.

As we continued, the trail climbed a gentle slope through a beautiful mix of hardwood and pine trees. The forest felt alive but peaceful — birds calling overhead, the occasional rustle in the leaves. The path stays wide and easy the whole way, perfect for families or anyone wanting a relaxed hike. Wear a good pair of supportive sneakers or light hiking shoes — we loved ours from Merrell. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle, especially on warmer days. We use this one from Hydro Flask that keeps drinks cold for hours.

We wrapped up the hike feeling refreshed, not worn out. The Madison County Nature Trail is a hidden gem — short, scenic, and surprisingly peaceful just minutes from everyday life. If you’re in the area, pack some water, bring your camera for that covered bridge and pond, and enjoy an easy morning in nature. Highly recommend it for a quick reset.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve done this hike. What did you enjoy most about it?
