Since moving to Huntsville a while back, I’ve been trying to get outside as much as possible. As a family we have always made being outside a priority. We love hiking and always seek out the best trails wherever we live. Huntsville has been no different. These 5 easy hikes in Huntsville have quickly become some of my favorites.

When we first started hiking years ago, I learned very quickly that having the right gear is important. Never go out in nature without at least some preparation! One thing I quickly learned is how important it is to have the right gear — especially good hiking shoes and a comfortable daypack. The right equipment really makes exploring new trails so much more enjoyable. Even though these are considered “easy” hikes, it never hurts to be prepared.
Here are five easy hikes that have helped me fall in love with Rocket City:
#1 Three Caves Trail

This was one of the first places I visited and it completely blew me away. You walk right up to three massive cave openings from an old limestone quarry. It feels like a little adventure without being too tough.
#2 Madison County Nature Trail on Green Mountain
I love this one on busy days because it’s so peaceful and flat. It loops around a pretty lake with a cute covered bridge. Perfect when I just need to clear my head. And… there’s a bathroom at the trailhead!

#3 Big Spring Park
This is my go-to when I don’t feel like driving far. It’s right downtown, totally paved, and super easy. This may be considered more of a stroll in the park, but its a great option for families with small kids or those who work downtown who just need a little break from office life.
#4 Keel Mountain Preserve – Lost Sink Trail

This one has quickly become a favorite. The trail takes you through a beautiful forest and ends at a really cool waterfall that flows into a sinkhole. So unique! While I consider this an easy hike, this is the hardest one of the bunch. Totally out in nature, a little bit more rugged with a slight increase in elevation as you move towards the sinkhole. But totally worth the extra effort!

#5 Tennessee River Greenway at Ditto Landing
This might be my number one pick so far. Walking along the Tennessee River with water views the whole time is incredibly relaxing. Plus if you need to get in a few extra steps, you can hop onto the nearby Aldridge Creek Greenway and walk for miles along Aldridge Creek.
Quick Tip: Don’t forget the bug spray! The mosquitoes can get pretty bad here, especially near the water.
These easy hikes in Huntsville have been perfect for me as a newcomer — easy enough that I don’t feel overwhelmed, but interesting enough that I keep wanting to explore more.
Have you tried any of these trails? Let me know in the comments!
